Drywall range hood, can I use paper for outside corners instead of corner bead since it’s out of harm’s way?

Can I use drywall paper instead of corner bead for the outside corners since it’s up out of harms way?

It’s all wood framed. The drywall pieces wrap inward, at the bottom, and then up inside a little giving a 3″ thick edge at the bottom where the stainless steel insert goes. I think using corner bead along the bottom will give it too harsh of a corner there. I’m going for a softer, plaster-like look but not at all like a bull-nose. Plus the two vertical corners are 3 1/4″ radius that I built layering mesh and compound so there’s definitely a conflict where the corner bead would meet those rounded corners along the bottom edge. Tell me what you think.
Part of my problem, and this is my fault, is that I haven’t left myself enough room to really layer that much on the inside were the stainless insert pan will meet the drywall. The paper is thin enough to require less layering to get the look I want.

I’ve used the paper tape on my inside corners and haven’t had any problems with cracking there. I was hoping the hood’s location up and out of the way would eliminate the need for impact resistant corners.

The corner bead keeps corners and angles sharp, and prevents plaster from falling apart every time they are whacked with something. It covers the angles where two areas meet so that they can be finished without a seam or gap showing. Without it, you could possible develop a stress crack in that area, and THAT won’t be easy to fix.

The drywall paper is just used to cover flat seams, and coated with joint compound. It provides no stability whatsoever on angles. In fact, it shouldn’t be used on angles at all.

Use the bead, then use plaster to soften the look. Just add layers of plaster, smoothing to get the rounded, softer look you want.

you can use what ever you want. just remember if you use paper tape it is not as durable as corner bead. also the vent hood will vibrate when in use so make sure what ever you use can take it.
