FAQ about Steam Cookers Vegetables
Question by phatlip: How can I steam vegetables in my rice cooker without a steam basket?
I have limited access to a kitchen right now so I need to get the most use out of my appliances. I want to steam vegetables and fish in my rice cooker but I don’t have a steamer basket. Does anyone know a way to do this? Can i just put a regular bowl in there? It is a small rice cooker and I don’t want to spend money on a steamer. How can I keep the vegetables etc. out of the water, I don’t want to boil them.

Thanks

It’s extremely difficult and you can run into problems. May I suggest you either get a 2nd steamer or get the one I have that has 2 layers. I bought it from Sears last month only .99. It’s a Black & Decker model and is awesome, very easy to clean and has a timer that goes off when done. There are others that have 3 levels, whatever suits your needs.

the jury’s still out about this item.i had a Tefal Steamer before this one and although the plastic bottoms of the 3 sections were always a bit flimsy they lasted for years. This new Morphy-Richards one is a lot more solid but i seem to have difficulty stacking one section on top of the other. It’s just a bit awkward. It has to be exactly in the right position and when there is boiling water and steam about a slight slip could be dangerous. So i wouldn’t say don’t buy it but be careful when using.

The Salton Europe people that i bought it from were fine though.Good fast service and i’d use them again for sure.

This steamer is just great! And should say that the delivery to Spain was quite prompt. The Item has covered all my expectations: it’s easy to maintain, easy in use, easy to wash, is quite spacios, and the manual includes some tips on steaming times – what else would one need? And now I can experiment with healthy dishes even more!

after years of using a steamer on the hob we decided to get an electric one. the russell hobbs 15071 was the chosen item, and it is fantastic. it will surely cut our electric bills as it is up and steaming very quickly. the old one on the hob used to take at least 10 minutes to start steaming. excellent addition to our kitchen.

Excellent price. Large “spout” from the base making refilling and emptying easy. Dial not digital so can extend time during cooking easily. Baskets slot inside each other so less bulky when not being used. Adjustable base on baskets so can put tall items in. Can use any of the 3 baskets singly on the base. Only downside for me was it stained easily with carrot juices, but this was only inside.

Do not know how I lived without it. It makes cooking so clean and easy and just about everything goes into the three layers leaving me time to do other things. Great

I bought this steamer to replace a ancient, broken one & the first thing that struck my was that it looked well designed. And, to look at it, it is. The tiers stack well within each other for storage & the excess steam capture is superb. My old one used to sit in a puddle of water on the worktop!

In use it steams well, but I suspect you can say that of even the cheapest sold here. However, I don’t know of any food which requires 45 minutes to steam. I would bet that most people would set the timer at 25-30 minutes, maximum. So which bright spark at Russell Hobbs thought that setting the steamer at 45 minutes when you turn it on was a good idea?

You have to reduce the time in ONE minute intervals, but you increase it in FIVE minute intervals. If you are careless like me, you’ll miss the time you need by a minute, have to increase it by FIVE & come back down by four. What a pain!

So in all(?) cases you will need to press the time button A LOT, which means within a couple of weeks the image on the button has worn off. Great design, again? Perhaps this is also the reason why, after a few months our first steamer wouldn’t let us reduce the time at all. Amazon replaced it within the week & so far the new one has worked okay. But it has lost its button images already.

As a steamer it works well, if you can put up with its foibles. The people at Russell Hobbs clearly don’t use steamers, otherwise they would have had a more sensible default time. It’s a pain, but not a deal breaker, I suppose, but this design stupidity IS reflected in my rating.
