FAQ about Small Slow Cookers
Question by bu77erfly0183: Small slow cooker setting?
I have a really small slow cooker, (for 2 people or so) and the ceramic bowl doesn’t come out. It just has a plug, no hi or lo setting. How do I know how long to cook something if I don’t know if it’s on hi or lo?
Michael H- Thank you for your answer. I actually have a big, normal one, but I need to use the small one too. I got it as a wedding gift 5 years ago and have yet to use it.

it will keep it at a consistent heat of approximately 80degrees celcius, which is enough to kill all bacteria in meat, simmer and not let it boil. it often takes longer than on a stove top. if making a pot of chilli for isntance, brown meats, onions and chillis before slow cooking then you can eat it when you think the flavour is right without the risk of undercooked meat.

I bought this because I was looking for a slow cooker capable of cooking smaller amounts of food than my existing Tower Slo-cooker, which has a capacity of 3.5 litres. Apart from the dog, I’m the only meat eater in the house so, while the bigger slo-cooker is great for those family meals, I wanted something that would cook MY dinners and not have so much leftover that I was eating the same thing for days afterwards!

This little cooker is brilliant! The white ceramic pot is glazed all over – including the bottom – so it’s very easy to keep clean. It takes up next to no space in our small and crowded kitchen and the glass lid means you can see how your dinner is getting along. It cooks perfect roast beef and porrige made with water is so creamy you’d think it was made with full cream milk.

I know the product info says it is 1.5L but actually I think it’s smaller than that but having said that, I can still squeeze a 1kg brisket into it, so I don’t care. Also, be a little wary of the cookbook that comes with it because I think they’ve got some of their ingredient quntities wrong. I don’t care about that either as there are literally loads of slo cook recipes available for free in the net.

If you’re after a slo cooker capable of doing no more than four portions at a time, that you can load up, forget about it, and just get on with your day then this is for you. If you have many mouths to feed then you should go for something bigger. For my part, I love it and I use it 2 or 3 times a week.

This slow cooker is ideal for one or two people, and because of it’s compact size is perfect to leave on the worktop – so you can use it! I also bought the book ‘slow cooking for yourself’ and it’s got some great ideas. The only criticism I would have is that it doesn’t have a timer (but this is easily solved if you plug it into a timer). It’s great to come home from work and have dinner ready.

This slow cooker is fab if you are cooking for one. the problem i always had i could hardly cover the bottom of the dish in a normal size cooker making food more prone to drying out, have tried curries and stews and even dumpings a one pot meal my kind of cooking and it is small enough to fit neatly in a corner of my work tops.

This really works very well. There is a useful manual with quite a few good recipes, though they are geared to a larger model I think, but you can just cut the ingredients. Once this cooker gets going it does an almost invisible simmer on Low , and a gentle simmer on High. I tried it with chicken and vegetables and they were delicious, with the meat falling off the bone. I was driven to buy a slow cooker because I have been living on ready meals since I retired but now find I can’t get the food I want (eg no battery chicken, low calorie, low fat etc) from ready meals, and I will just have to cook it myself. This item has converted me to slow cooking. It is really easy with no burnt pans. It is useful there is an indicator light because not all models have the. I am planning all sorts of menus now. A good buy.

PROS: Excellent value for the price, just the right size for one or two portions, compact, easy to clean, simple to use, and only costs about the same as a light bulb to run (apparently). Completely silent, although, if the cooker is set to high, I’ve found that the lid has a tendency to ‘pop’ as steam escapes from around the rim. An upturned cup plonked over the lid will give it the extra weight it needs to stop this!

CONS: No timer, though this might be resolved by using a separate timer plug. Nor does it have the ‘auto’ heat setting mentioned in some slow cooking recipe books (which will cook your food on ‘high’ for the first hour before automatically adjusting it to ‘low’).

This is excellent as a first step to slow cooking. Its a bit difficult trying to halve recipes – too much veg can slow the cooking process down, and you cant put too much meat into it either. Best to cook the meat in a large frying pan first, through and potaoes can be parr boiled to quicken the cooking process. Having said that, I have so far cooked chilli, chicken curry, beef stew, pork in apples & cider, paprika chicken and rice. All delicious. No need to add salt, the flavours speak for themselves. Usually lasts me 2 x meals, or 3 if stretched with rice, potatoes. There is a ‘one pot’ cookery book suggested with this but it is not for slow cookers, although the recipes are easily adaptable for same. Slow Cooker by Sara Lewis is also good. Looking forward to progressing next year onto a larger cooker with a timer. But this is excellent value for money.

Best idea I ever had was to start using a slow cooker and some meals I can even stretch to 2 people if a serve with sides. Excellent and easy to use.

I purchased this as a gift for my elderly mum, who has had a number of slow cookers before, but pronounced this one the best she has had. She eats like a sparrow and anything she makes in it lasts for a couple of days, so I imagine for the single person with a normal appetite, this would be perfect. Looks nice too.

I bought this cooker to downsize from the one I use at present, and I was not disappointed. Add meat/veg switch on and forget about it until it is time to eat. Perfect results every time.

Assume it’s on low, cook for seven hours. If your dish isn’t cooked by then, finish it off by simmering on the stove. And, next time you feel that you can invest in a better slow cooker, the kind where you can remove the ceramic bowl and choose between hi and lo, do it.
